Business Intelligence?
According
to Wikipedi, "Business
Intelligence (BI) refers to skills, processes,
technologies, applications and practices used to support decision making"
If you think that sounds a little broad, I agree!
"BI" and
other related terms - OLAP,
Data Warehouseing, Data Mining -
have been thrown around enough recently to mean just about
anything IT-related. While this has created some confusion,
it has also
created a demand for powerful analytical tools at accessible prices.
For example, if your organization has SQL Server and Excel licences, you already have the building blocks for the powerful analytical tools that some have paid tens of thousands to acquire. If you investigate Excel Pivot Table tutorials (such as this one from AddictiveTips.com) you will see how powerful and flexible these standard tools can be. Couple the Excel interface with SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) at the "back end" and you are positioned to perform the in-depth analysis that once cost millions.
So take advantage of the hype! A little research may uncover the tools and unlock a "data gold mine" that you didn't know you had.

Microsoft Office 2007 & 2010 include many new, rich features - but there is also a pretty steep learning curve if you're a verteran of previous Office versions. Check out the Get Started page on Microsoft Office Online for a suprisingly large number of free demos and tutorials to help you get up to speed.
